André Marfaing (1925-1987)

From 23rd November 2017 to 26th March 2018

Native of Toulouse, André Marfaing joined Paris and its bubbling cultural heart in 1949. Artistic friendships with Pierre Soulages, Alfred Manessier, Maurice Estève, Roger Bissière, etc., encourage his commitment to the way of abstraction. Privileging the relations between black and white, his first works, covered with strong impasto, join the research of abstract expressionists. Getting up the oil painting, he definitively adopted the technique of acrylic in 1971. From then on, he articulates the perception of the space of the canvas in combinations that are increasingly purified. The relationship between emptiness and fullness, shadow and light becomes essential and express with superior mastery his understanding of the perfect forms of Roman architecture as well as his immersion in the Cathar dualism. From the 1980s on, he  devoted his latest research to the diffusion of the white,  ultimate evolution of his art. The luminous works of Marfaing reject the superfluous  in the quest for an absolute where the incandescent white of light takes precedence.

Designed in collaboration with the Carcassonne Museum of Fine Arts (June 23-September 24, 2017), this exhibition has benefited from the full support and generosity of the artist's family.
