The theme of Mary Magdalene in prayer stems directly from the instructions given by the exegetes of the Counter-Reformation and from the decree « on holy images » issued at the Council of Trent.  Guido Reni specialises in this kind of female character, the ideal of beauty and perfection, a true model of both love and contemplative life, and painted a dozen of Saint Mary Magdalene, sometimes in the Sainte-Baume grotto.  This masterpiece entered Royal collections in 1670.
