H. 54,2 cm - L. 44 cm

In this small panel of private devotion, the Child holds a goldfinch and an apple, respectively symbols of Passion and Redemption.  The Sienese Sano di Pietro specialised in this favoured theme of religious painting.  He combines certain elements of Sienese style, such as the gold background and the punched motifs, as well as new Florentine expressions such as the contouring of faces, as influenced by Fra Angelico.
