Close to the Chapelle de Notre-Dame-de-la-Joie in Penmarc’h, the artist, who spends a large part of the year in the Pays Bigouden, draws Bigouden women harvesting potatoes.  In the studio later, on canvas, he divides the composition into the different stages of the harvesting process.  The real subject of the work is the young woman who stops for a moment to wipe her brow and turns towards the artist.  It is this modest Bigouden woman who holds our attention, and the artist bestows her with great dignity.
