H. 61,2 cm - L. 53 cm

The young painter from Orleans, Roger Toulouse, seeks the advice of Max Jacob who had gone to live in Saint-Benoit-sur-Loire.  The elderly poet encourages him and introduces him in artistic circles.  A great friendship develops despite the difference in age.  In January 1942, terrified by the persecutions affecting his family, the poet takes refuge with his friend’s in-laws.  This portrait was painted at that time.  Max Jacob appears in despair and fatalistic faced with the spreading barbarism.
