Allocated by the Musée du Louvre in 1876, transfered in 2013 to the Museum of Fine Arts of Quimper.

In 1817, Rouget received a commission for two canvases (the second, Saint Louis pardonnant à Pierre de Bretagne (Saint Louis pardoning Pierre de Bretagne), also held in Quimper) for the Œil-de-bœuf salon at the Château de Versailles. Louis IX, leading the seventh crusade to liberate the holy places, was taken prisoner. Rouget specialised in these evocations of the history of the Middle Ages and contributed to a liking for the « troubadour » style.
