Yves Tanguy (1900-1955) - Le Pont, 1925 - Huile sur toile, 40.5 x 33 cm - Musée des beaux-arts de Quimper - Don de Catherine Prévert, 2017

Oil on canvas

2017-3-1

Gifted by Catherine Prévert in 2017

H. 40,5 - H. 33 cm

Thanks to the generosity of Catherine Prévert, Le Pont allows us to witness the first steps of this surrealist painter and to shed new light on the friendship that binds the artist to Marcel Duhamel and to the brothers Jacques and Pierre Prévert.
Indeed, it is the second oil on canvas executed by the self-taught Yves Tanguy (the first, Rue de la Santé is in the Museum of Modern Art of New York). Catherine Prévert, the daughter of Pierre Prévert, niece of Jacques, decides in 2017 to offer it to the City of Quimper, motivated by the strong ties of Tanguy with the region.

This painting Le Pont  sets the stage for the career of the "surrealist painter par excellence", little represented in French public collections. In this work, the atmosphere of the rue du Château emerges : a certain anarchism, the taste for popular culture, this "avant André Breton" and this trio Tanguy-Prévert-Duhamel who, from Paris to Brittany, marked the history of the arts.
