The winter landscape is considered an excellent example of 17th century Dutch painting. It was first included in the series, the « Four seasons » and the « Twelve months », and then became a separate genre.

Joos de Momper the younger became a specialist, working with Sebastiaen Vrancx (1573 - 1647) who was responsible for painting the figures. The attribution of this work to Momper II is uncertain and the name of another specialist, Gijsbrecht Lytens has sometimes been put forward.
