Sérusier found solitude in the heart of Argoat.  While there, he creates a universal female type that is more oriental than Breton, which he uses in his representations of different aspects of daily life. This female type is reduced to its simplest form, using shapes and colours, in keeping with the setting.  However, in his use of sinuous lines, he gives them a certain elegance, reminiscent of the concubines of Japanese prints.
