At the centre of the Bay of Douarnenez was the legendary town of Ys. Dahut, daughter of King Gradlon, gave in to the advances of the devil, who, in the guise of her lover, opened the floodgates of the dikes protecting the town. The King attempted to save his daughter, but God, speaking through the mouth of Saint Guénolé, ordered him to sacrifice the sinner.  The over-laden horse was in danger of being overcome by the sea.
