Napoleon III commissioned this work for the historic museum at Versailles, as evidence of his love for the Middle Ages and also his attachment to Brittany.  This battle, of unprecedented savagery, which took place on the 26th March 1351, is one of the best-known episodes of the Hundred Years war, which in Brittany corresponds to the War of Succession.  Thirty soldiers from each side confronted each other between Josselin and Ploërmel.  The painter shows great documentary accuracy, both in the details of costumes as well as in the arms that decorate the frame.
